Event Description: Buried Alive: Life Beneath the Seafloor Dr. Beth Orcutt, Senior Research Scientist, Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences, East Boothbay, ME Roughly seventy percent of Earth’s surface is covered by marine sediment and oceanic crust. This marine subsurface serves as a vast reservoir of microscopic life "buried alive," yet scientists don’t fully understand how all of the microbes get their energy to grow, or the full impact of their activity on chemical cycling. The Charles and Marie Fish Lecture will highlight expeditions led by Dr. Orcutt to explore for life in deep sediment and rocks, and will present an overview of exciting discoveries. The Charles and Marie Fish Lecture is an annual public lecture endowed by the family of Drs. Charles and Marie Fish. The Fishes established a marine biological program at the University in 1935 and eventually a graduate program in oceanography at the Narragansett Marine Laboratory, which later became URI’s Graduate School of Oceanography.
