Grist Mill Gears Up for Harvest Johnny Cake Festival
The nationally acclaimed Johnny Cake Festival from the 1970s and ‘80s will be coming back after two years of successful Harvest Festivals at Kenyon’s Grist Mill. On October 22 & 23 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., enjoy a unique combination of old and new as this year’s Harvest Johnny Cake Festival takes a transition into the past.
In the quaint Rhode Island village of Usquepaugh, along the edge of the scenic Queen’s River and waterfall, over 75 local farms, artisans and businesses will be joining the celebration. In addition to live music, entertainment, animals, and demonstrations, there will be an array of food, sweets and beverage samples. Purchase from a variety of feast and fare as well as numerous crafts and products that reflect the season.
Take a step back in time and enjoy a tour of the mill and grinding process. At harvests long ago, farmers would take their grain to be ground at local gristmills. Since 1696, this tradition still holds strong at Kenyon’s Grist Mill, where a variety of corn and other grains are ground the old-fashioned way, between two very large Westerly granite millstones. Sample Rhode Island Johnny Cakes, made with Kenyon’s Stone Ground White Corn Meal or purchase a larger order of this traditional treat. Kenyon’s famous Clam Cakes and Chowder will also be included in the selection of local delicacies.
