Event Description:
Falconry, the ancient sport of hunting wild prey with trained hawks, originated in Asia more than four thousand years ago and was introduced to Europe during the Middle Ages. Because training and keeping birds of prey requires a great deal of time, money, and space, the sport was enjoyed almost exclusively by the the elite. Vivian Maxson is a licensed wildlife rehabilitator who holds state and federal permits in falconry and raptor education. At the nonprofit Born to Be Wild Nature Center in Bradford, she cares for about sixty birds and a dozen mammals, including injured and orphaned birds of prey. She will tell us what it takes to train a bird of prey to fly freely, hunt with a human, and voluntarily return to captivity. “Luna,” a Red-tailed Hawk, will give us a free-flight demonstration.
